Stay in Swatara – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 71

Today I zeroed in on Stay-at-Swatara and I’m very happy with that choice. For breakfast, Eric gave us a free ride to the Uniontown Diner. The food was good and affordable. We gave it an 8/10 for a hiker’s breakfast. After taking an Uber back to the hostel, I spent a lot of time planning which, frankly, is probably boring. Let me tell you about Swatara.

Eric, the owner, was very helpful. He was always there when we needed something, but never hanging around. Currently the bunk beds are cots in a large tent. I would stay there again as is. But Eric is building the cabin into some of the nicest bunk beds I’ve seen on the trail. You can really tell that it focuses on hikers and a good experience.

Replenishment is great. Yes, it costs more than a Walmart but it’s pretty reasonable. They also have sandwiches and pizzas. I wish I had sandwiches for dinner. It would have been much better than fast food and cheaper. Eric also told us about his plans for the options here, which included a nice pizza oven. This may be a must stop for next year’s hikers.

It was a good zero. My feet are much better. I did a lot of planning and blogging. I just wish the nearby AT sections were good enough to justify returning with Red and Snow.

  • Breakfast: Pancakes, omelette, hash browns, toast.
  • Dinner: 3x double cheeseburgers
  • Appetizers: pizza
  • Days without a ramen bomb: 71
  • Today I am grateful for: Eric and his shelter.
