Switzerland awards first penalty of 2026 FIFA World Cup

Switzerland were awarded the first penalty of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Qatar on June 13 at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

The award was awarded in the 13th minute of the match after goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada fouled Remo Freuler in the penalty area.

A lengthy check followed while the video assistant referee checked for two possible offside situations in the build-up.

After the decision was confirmed, Breel Embolo cleared the penalty, sending Abunda the wrong way as he shot into the bottom left corner.

This is Switzerland’s first penalty in regular time at the World Cup, which is being played for the thirteenth time.
