I think everyone’s morning started early today at Pig Farm Campground. Most of us were walking the 15 miles to Daleville and wanted to get it over with as soon as possible. I had a lot of errands to run in the city today and wanted to make sure there was enough time.
running to the city
For most of the day I walked right behind a guy I met a few days ago. He set a good pace and I thought he would get me to Daleville ahead of schedule. Listening to all their backpacking stories also kept my mind busy. He’s ridden more trails than anyone I’ve ever known and the AT will complete his Triple Crown.
Tinker Cliffs
Today on the trail we saw Tinker Cliffs, which completes my Triple Crown of Virginia. It was another beautiful, clear day and the views were just as spectacular as the night before. My phone was dead at the time so I didn’t take any photos. I guess you’ll have to see for yourself (just kidding, but really).
All in a day’s work
We arrived in Daleville before 1pm, even earlier than I had planned. Luckily, there was a shopping center just down the street that had everything I needed. I stocked up at Kroger, bought fuel and backpacking meals at the clothing store, sent cold weather gear home at UPS, bought a new shirt at Goodwill, and grabbed a burger at the barbecue. The coffee shop also let me hang out and charge my phone. All in all, I did a lot.
Once I was done, I headed back to the trail and walked another mile to Beech Hill Hostel. I had to carry my Kroger bags on this little stretch, which I thought was funny.

As always, my stay at the hostel was a great experience. The owner, Beth, was very friendly. There was a Daleville hiker dinner at a local church that I had not attended because I couldn’t eat most of the food. Beth brought me a little bag of gluten-free Oreo cookies and offered to make me gluten-free pancakes for breakfast. I will never cease to be amazed by the generosity of the strangers I meet on the AT.
I talked to my mom and husband on the phone before going to sleep. I think it was a productive day.
