Torino hold Inter Milan 2-2 and keep the Serie A title race open

Champions-elect Inter Milan were held to a 2-2 draw in Torino on Sunday, with the Serie A leaders squandering a two-goal lead to leave the title race behind with four rounds to go.

Inter rises to 79 points, 10 points ahead of Napoli, which won 4-0 at Cremonese on Friday. AC Milan are three points behind Napoli in third place ahead of their home match against fourth-placed Juventus later on Sunday. Torino is 13th with 41 points.

Inter looked to be cruising after Marcus ‌Thuram put his side ahead in the 23rd minute and Yann Bisseck doubled the lead 16 minutes after half-time with another header, but Torino clawed their way back into the match.

Giovanni Simeone pulled one back with twenty minutes to go after a well-constructed build-up and Nikola Vlasic equalized from the penalty spot nine minutes later.

The visitor created chances early on, with Manuel Akanji heading narrowly wide and Ange Yoan-Bonny’s shot forcing goalkeeper Alberto Paleari into a save before the opening goal.

Inter’s assist man Federico Dimarco floated a beautiful cross to the back post where Thuram rose unchallenged and squeezed his header past ‌Paleari.

Dimarco came close to scoring himself shortly after half-time, with Paleari handing his shot away, but the Inter defender registered his 18th assist of the season when Bisseck got on the end of his corner and whipped in a header via the post.

Simeone started the comeback when he cleverly lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper Yann Sommer after Emirhan Ilkhan’s pass. The goal brought Torino to life and the pressure was rewarded when Carlos Augusto’s handball resulted in the penalty.

Vlasic made no mistake from the spot and the hosts then withstood a late siege by Inter, with Piotr Zielinski pulling a shot wide in extra time to earn the point, meaning they are mathematically safe from relegation.
