Towards the west: the walk

A new adventure

The band is back together! Spokes, NatGeo and I have headed west to conquer the Colorado Trail. I’ve only hiked eastern trails, so this will be very different.

Obstacle 1 is elevation. Most of the trail is above 10,000 feet and rises to over 13,000. At 10,000 feet, the oxygen is only 70% of what I’m used to on the Connecticut coast.

To acclimatize, we arrived in Colorado a few days early to adjust and do a short day hike. We didn’t even leave VRBO when this blew us away.

A herd of elk came into the field behind our house; NatGeo counted 34. Incredible!

One day hike

We are only in the local parks and this is what we have seen:

It’s going to be a great hike.

Of course, many thanks to Pat, my wonderful wife, for helping make this possible and for taking us on excursions for the day. Here she is on our Machu Pichu adventure.

Thanks for listening.
