UEFA Champions League semi-final: Why Bayern Munich didn’t get a penalty despite Joao Neve’s handball call

Bayern Munich fell behind early in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain and had a major penalty appeal rejected after half an hour at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.

During the incident (32 mins), Vitinha’s clearance appeared to hit Joao Neves on the arm in the penalty area, prompting Bayern’s players to surround the referee in protest.

However, according to IFAB Rule 12 of the Laws of the Game, it is not considered a handball violation when:

“A player is hit on the hand/arm by the ball played by a teammate, unless the ball goes directly into the opponent’s goal or the player scores immediately afterwards, in which case a direct free kick or penalty will be awarded to the other team.”
