The morning started with a quick stop at Cookie Lady. I just got water, but I’m very grateful for it. Maybe I mentioned this before, but I don’t like filtering. Yes, spring water is good, but not good enough for the task of filtering it. I’m a fan of the convenience of tap water.
The trail was largely flat with only a small hill from the shelter to Dalton, MA, my first town today. The ice cream parlor was not open but the cafeteria was. I had a bagel and a breakfast burrito for my first meal in town. Only 1000′ of climbing and then descending stood between me and food in the next town.
I did not.
There was a smoothie stall and stuff like that right on the road as I walked towards Cheshire. With a strawberry milkshake in hand I stopped at Father Tom’s campground for dinner. The camp had water and electricity, plus Gatorade from a local church. I left with a full stomach, full water and almost a full load.

Leaving Cheshire, the trail launched straight into the 2500′ climb of Mount Greylock. Today I only climbed 1500 to the Mark Noepel hut. The climb had several steep sections. But I also ate city food twice today, which gave me what I needed. I arrived at the shelter at five, so I hope to get a good night’s rest.
