Germany secured a 2-1 victory over World Cup co-hosts the United States in their final warm-up match in Chicago on Saturday.
It was the ninth straight victory for four-time world champions Germany, who are looking to rebuild their battered international reputation after shock first-round results at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
The Germans, who were dealt a blow in training on Friday when teenager Lennart Karl was ruled out of the World Cup due to a muscle injury, surprised the co-host with a strong start.
Kai Havertz found far too much space in the box and headed in Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick to give them a second-minute lead.
The Americans gradually recovered as the visiting side took their foot off the gas and grabbed a stunning equalizer when Antonee Robinson thundered home a volley in the 37th minute after defender Jonathan Tah had headed away a corner.
After the break the tables were turned, with Germany taking control and Leroy Sane bursting in from 12 yards to put Germany ahead again in the 57th.
The match lost some pace in the second half, with both teams making a number of substitutions.
