Lionel Messi started his 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in spectacular fashion, scoring a stunning long-range strike in Argentina’s opening match against Algeria in Kansas City on Tuesday.
The goal was Messi’s 118th for Argentina in international football and his 14th in the FIFA World Cup, moving him level with Gerd Müller and Kylian Mbappé on the tournament’s all-time goalscoring list.
In the 17th minute, midfielder Rodrigo De Paul divided the Algerian defense with a perfectly weighted pass to Messi in the final third. The Argentina captain took a touch to turn towards goal, moved a few steps and unleashed a stunning strike into the top right corner.
