The water is heavy. After yesterday’s panic planning I decided to carry 5.5 liters. Last night we learned about a reliable water reservoir 5 miles away. Following the 4 miles/liter recommendation, 5.5 liters should last me the remaining 16 miles plus a little for tomorrow. I made sure to pack my dinner with as little water as possible just to be safe.
I started my morning at 5am with Penguin. Just in case, we stopped at McDonald’s for a breakfast sandwich and coffee. This didn’t sit well with my stomach and I almost had a bathroom mishap a few miles away.

Getting to the trail was a bit tricky. Penguin and I took the scenic route, missing the trail 3 times as we went around the overpass, tunnels, and train tracks. Once we got out of there, we were flying.

At the water tower, we met up with Judge and a couple other hikers. The tank was full of water. More gallons than I could count. Whoever maintains that cache is truly an angel and inspires me to want to return the favor to other hikers next year and years to come.

I walked with Judge for a long time this morning. I love the random chats and connections we make here. Meeting someone while walking completely distracted me from the climb and the heat. The judge is incredible. He is almost 60 years old and has extensive outdoor experience, from hiking to climbing and horseback riding. She is here putting in long days and big miles and I hope to be like her when I grow up.

We took a short break in the slightest shade and split up to walk alone into the afternoon heat. Climbing slowly and up from the desert floor with over 6000 feet of gain is a wild experience. The terrain changes completely from sand and agave to soft dirt and pine trees. Finishing the climb with views of the Cajon Pass is a very rewarding experience. I took a moment to pause and think that I was down there this morning.

I arrived at camp around 5:00 pm and set up my tent right away. The bugs are gone and I’m exhausted after today’s walk. Speaking of bugs, I saw Bug at camp! He caught up with us and will stop in Wrightwood tomorrow for the day. I’m excited to catch up with her and the team in town.
