Today started like any other, except I was woken up by a morning alarm. I started setting one up on my smartwatch, hoping to get out of camp sooner. I find my energy and stamina are much better in the morning and I’d like to take advantage of that as much as possible, especially as I start pushing myself to cover more miles each day.
Southern Cookie Lady
The first few miles of the day were all downhill and it was a good way to relax. After about 5 miles, we reached Log Cabin Drive and took a short hike to Southern Cookie Lady’s house. Cookie Lady lives right next to the trail and offers free cookies, water, and a trash can to hikers. While I didn’t have a cookie (not gluten free), I definitely took advantage of the free water and the opportunity to throw out my trash. The Cookie Lady also came out to the porch to chat with us and it was a pleasure to meet the woman behind this kind gesture.
Time to climb
Leaving Cookie Lady’s house, we enter the biggest climb of the day. It was 5 miles of continuous climbing, but I took a break halfway for lunch. Once we reached the top, there were numerous pretty views and miles of walking on a rocky ridge. Some other hikers told me they had seen two rattlesnakes on the rocks, and I even backtracked to look for them to no avail. I’ve really been enjoying all the snakes along the way and get a little discouraged when I miss one.
an oasis
Today we hit the 300 mile mark and will sleep in one of the nicest campsites on the trail so far. Jerry’s Cabin Shelter is clean and has many large, flat campsites. I set up my tent and hunkered down for the night. Another cold front is on the way.
