Summary of the week-
I finished my first 100 miles on the AT…
My trail name has been transformed from King of Hearts to King Bougie; I earned it for always improving my hostel room.
The tram solidified: my traveling companions last week were Fire Ant, Spartacus, and Karaoke.

The miles have been gradually increasing, although I try to stay in the 8-10 mile range the first few weeks. My fancy shoes are breaking on the rocks; I’ll need a new pair soon. Hoping to make it to New Jersey before sending for my trail runners.
Day 7 – 11 miles from Fayetteville to Birch Run Shelter PA After a Nero shelter at Thru it all and a good BBQ along the way, the kind caretakers gave us food and drinks, plus a room for the night.
Day 8: 10 miles from Birch Run to Pine Grove Furnace. One of our most beautiful hikes: blue skies, moderate temperatures and quiet forests. 2 nights at Ironmasters Mansion, where we will do a relaxed package to Whiskey Ridge Rd, followed by transport back to our stopping point the next day.
Day 9, 14 miles from PGF to Whiskey Ridge. I was glad for the slackpack as it was a warm day with 2 challenging scrambles at the end. At least I had company.

The first mosquitoes arrived, seeking to avoid the path of my sunglasses towards my eyes.
Since I’m Bougie King, I got the only private room in the hostel. Of course I shared the bathroom with the tram 😉
Day 10: 14 miles from Whiskey Ridge Rd to Carlisle, PA. Early return in the rain to our starting point. Rain all morning with 4 climbs in our first 4 miles. I put on the drift poncho, which fit easily over me and my pack, while also keeping me fairly dry and cool. I think I’ll send my umbrella home. 19 miles of flat, green farmland to Boiling Springs, where we walked out of the rain at Cafe 101 for coffee while waiting for Aunt Fire to catch us. We headed to Carlisle for a zero day to dry off, resupply and get some rest.
Day 11 – Carlisle Day Zero. Visit REI, Walmart, and the post office for supplies. Fire Ant got some much-needed new shoes and sent his heavy bear canister home. We hiked for 4 days on the trail, with a stop in the town of Duncannon in the next few days. Tomorrow we will be back on the track!
