Cape Verde held defending champion Argentina to a 1-1 draw in regulation time on Friday during their Round of 32 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Miami.
Deroy Duarte scored for the African country in the second half after Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute.
This left Emy Martinez faced with the prospect of having to step up for a penalty shootout. The Argentina goalkeeper played at the same stadium during the 2022 World Cup final.
During his club and international career, Martinez conceded 43 penalties, nine of which he saved.
In penalty shootouts for Argentina, Martinez has saved 10 of 24 penalties. He helped La Albiceleste through two shootouts at the last World Cup, against the Netherlands in the quarter-final and then against France in the final.
