A place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup is up for grabs when two European heavyweights, Portugal and Spain, battle it out in their round of 16 tie in Dallas on Monday.

Spain went into the pre-quarter-finals with a 3-0 win over Austria, while Portugal defeated Croatia in stoppage time to secure their place in the last 16.

England referee Anthony Taylor will officiate in Portugal versus Spain in the round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Taylor officiated his first career match in the English Fifth Division in September 2005, the only match he was in charge of that season. The following season he became a more regular in the English lower divisions. The 47-year-old has been a FIFA-listed international referee since 2013.
This is Taylor’s second FIFA World Cup win, having taken charge of two group stage matches in the 2022 edition. He is a regular official in the Premier League.
According to StatsHubTaylor has officiated 561 matches so far in his career, handing out 3.78 yellow cards per match and a total of 56 red cards.
Taylor also refereed the UEFA Europa League 22/23 final, where Sevilla defeated Roma 5–2 on penalties. Taylor’s performance in the match drew criticism from then Roma manager Jose Mourinho, who reportedly met him in the stadium car park and called him a «disgrace».
He also refereed the 2017 and 2020 FA Cup finals, making him the first referee since 1901 to take charge of two FA Cup finals.
