England survived a tough battle against Mexico to record a 3-2 win on Sunday and book a place in the World Cup quarter-finals despite playing most of the second half with 10 men at the Azteca Stadium.
Jude Bellingham put England under control with two goals within a minute. He first finished off Bukayo Saka’s cross before tapping in Harry Kane’s pass to stun the home crowd.
Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico before half-time, and England were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Jarrell Quansah was sent off. However, Kane restored England’s cushion with two goals from the penalty spot after goalkeeper Raul Rangel fouled Anthony Gordon.
Raul Jimenez converted another penalty to reduce Mexico’s deficit, but England defended resolutely in the closing stages to seal a famous victory and a place in the last eight.
Who will England face in the quarter-final?
England will face Norway in the quarter-finals after the Scandinavian side defeated Brazil in the round of 16.
The two teams will meet on July 11 in Miami, where Norway will appear in a World Cup quarter-final for the first time ever.
