England defender Jarell Quansah was sent off during Sunday’s round of 16 match against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
The right back committed a foul on Jesus Gallardo and hit him first on the ankle with the studs.
The referee, Alireza Faghani from Australia, initially did not call a foul. However, he was called to the field monitor by VAR and the decision was overturned.
The decision gave Mexico a chance to get back into the match after trailing 2–1 at halftime.
However, Anthony Gordon won a penalty moments later, which Harry Kane converted to double the lead for the Three Lions in the 60th minute.
