Uruguay started its 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign against Saudi Arabia at the Miami Stadium on Monday. The attack is led by Federico Vinas and Darwin Nunez.
However, one big surprise in the starting eleven is the absence of Luis Suarez, Uruguay’s record scorer.
Suarez was left out of the final 26-man squad by head coach Marcelo Bielsa, despite announcing his willingness to retire if necessary.
The former Barcelona and Liverpool striker last played for his country in September 2024 against Paraguay.
Suarez has been scored 143 times by La Celeste and is their international top scorer with 69 goals.
Suarez’s former striker Edinson Cavani has also retired from international football.
