Why has the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 between Mexico and Ecuador been postponed?

The start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match between Mexico and Ecuador, to be played at Mexico City Stadium on Tuesday, has been postponed.

Co-host Mexico secured a spot in the knockouts after topping the group with three wins in three. Meanwhile, Ecuador advanced as one of the top eight third-placed teams with one win, one loss and one draw – the win coming against Germany in the final group stage.

Why has the Mexico-Ecuador match been postponed?

The Mexico-Ecuador FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match has been postponed due to adverse weather conditions around the Mexico City Stadium.

“The match will start when it is deemed safe to do so,” FIFA said at its official match centre.

This is the second time a match has been affected in this edition of the quadrennial tournament, after heavy rain halted play for almost two hours during France’s group match against Iraq.
