Why is there a 23-minute ad break during the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between South Korea and Czech Republic?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A match between South Korea and the Czech Republic, played at Guadalajara Stadium on Friday, was interrupted for a hydration break in the 23rd minute of the first half.

The pause in play is a player welfare measure introduced by FIFA to provide relief from the scorching temperatures, and also gives broadcasters a new opportunity to advertise during live play.

The process is repeated again in the second half around the 67th minute.

Water breaks have been available at previous World Cups, including Qatar 2022, depending on conditions, but 2026 marks a shift. FIFA has mandated three-minute hydration breaks in each half of every match, regardless of temperature, venue, host nation, roof or air conditioning.

The break also gives coaches a brief tactical window. Team officials may use small portable electronic equipment, including tablets and laptops, for coaching or player welfare purposes during matches
