Canadian player Alphonso Davies was not included in the starting line-up for the Round of 32 match against South Africa in Los Angeles on Sunday.
This was the fourth consecutive game in this World Cup that Davies, normally Canada’s captain, did not start.
He is recovering from a left hamstring injury suffered during the second leg of the Champions League semi-final with Bayern Munich’s Paris Saint Germain last month.
Canadian head coach Jesse Marsch said on match night that Davies was fit to play in the first-ever FIFA World Cup knockout match.
But the coach did not risk aggravating the injury and kept the 25-year-old on the bench.
