Why isn’t Christian Pulisic playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup match between USA and Australia?

USMNT talisman Christian Pulisic was not named in the US squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group D match against Australia on Friday.

Pulisic played a starring role in the US tournament opener against Paraguay, providing one assist in the side’s 4–1 win. However, he was substituted at half-time due to a suspected calf injury.

He had downplayed injury concerns after the match. «I got a bit of a kick in the first half, so I really hope it’s nothing. Take a little precaution today. But I hope I’ll be fine in the next few days.»

Since then, AC Milan have trained separately during US training sessions as they recover from the blow. Teammate Tyler Adams showed no concerns after one of the sessions. “Christian will be ready, everyone,” Adams told reporters. “Let’s relax.”

On Wednesday, team officials told reporters at the U.S. base camp that Pulisic is still being evaluated daily and is following a «modified training program,» which includes individual work both in the gym and on the field.
