Uruguay will take on Cape Verde in its second Group H match against Cape Verde in Miami on Sunday, hoping to pick up a win and boost its hopes of advancing to the round of 16.
However, the team will be without legendary striker Edinson Cavani, who is Uruguay’s second highest scorer (136) and second highest scorer (58) behind Luis Suarez.
The 39-year-old had announced his international retirement in 2024 and last played for Argentina’s Boca Juniors.
Cavani played four World Cups for Uruguay, starting with the 2010 edition in South Africa. By the end of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Cavani had five goals and two assists in 17 World Cup matches.
