Paul Pogba was missing from France’s starting line-up for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Senegal at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Tuesday.
The midfielder played a crucial role in the French title race in 2018, but missed out on a place in the squad for the next two editions.
The former Manchester United and Juventus player was handed a five-year ban in 2023 for doping. Although this was reduced to eighteen months after an appeal, Pogba still found it difficult to defend his selection for the 2026 edition.
He currently plays for Ligue 1 club Monaco, but only managed 113 minutes in six league matches in the 2025-2026 season.
In 2022, he missed Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad after missing much of the season due to knee injuries.
