Why was Fernando Muslera subbed off at half-time of the Spain vs Uruguay FIFA World Cup 2026 match?

Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was substituted at half-time of the 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Spain in Guadalajara on Friday.

The 40-year-old made a mistake in Spain’s opening goal in the 42nd minute of the match and was replaced by Sergio Rochet.

Muslera was expected to be the second choice behind Rochet for the World Cup, but head coach Marcelo Bielsa opted to go with the 137-cap veteran between the sticks.

He failed to prevent Alex Baena’s tame effort from 15 yards out, getting the timing wrong as the ball bounced through his gloves and into the net.

The custodian had also made mistakes that led to a goal in his side’s previous two group stage encounters, spilling the ball in the build-up to Saudi Arabia’s goal and rushing off the line against Cape Verde.

The former Galatasaray goalkeeper played five World Cup campaigns for the national team from 2010.
