World Cup winner Pavard confirms departure from Marseille

World Cup winner Benjamin Pavard announced on Monday that he is leaving Marseille, where he was loaned from Inter Milan and played only one season.

“Turning a page today with Marseille,” Pavard said on social media.

«Wearing this shirt will remain a powerful experience in my career and in my life. I have always tried to give everything on the pitch and represent this club with respect and dedication.»

«I leave with many emotions, lessons and the memory of a dressing room that remained united until the end. Thank you to the club, the staff, my teammates and everyone who supported us this season.»

Pavard, who won the World Cup with France in 2018, came from Inter to Marseille last summer on loan with an option to buy.

But after a strong start, his performances declined throughout the season.

The 55-time international, 30, was whistled loudly when he came on as a substitute at the Velodrome Stadium in Marseille for Sunday’s Ligue 1 match against Rennes, the last of his 37 games for the Mediterranean club.

Marseille finished the season in fourth place with 59 points, well behind champions Paris Saint-Germain with 76. The placement guarantees Marseille a place in the third qualifying round of the Champions League next season.
