The 2025-2026 FA Cup season has seen plenty of opponents, from Wrexham AFC beating Nottingham Forest to Macclesfield stunning holders Crystal Palace in the third round.
But one of the key questions surrounding the competition has been whether Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be available – a technology that has become a norm in the Premier League.
Is there VAR in the 2025-2026 FA Cup?
Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be available for FA Cup matches from the fifth round in the 2025-2026 season.
Why is there no VAR in the third and fourth rounds of the FA Cup?
Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will be operational from the fifth round, as agreed last season, given the logistical challenges of the tournament.
“It has been agreed that VAR will be used for every match in the fifth round of the competition up to and including the final at Wembley Stadium and will not be used for the third and fourth rounds.
“VAR was previously only used in the Emirates FA Cup for matches at Wembley Stadium and Premier League grounds due to the infrastructure, staff and costs required to operate it.
“This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs participating in the same stage of the competition.”
