Bodo/Glimt dumped last season’s finalists Inter Milan from the Champions League with a remarkable 2-1 win at San Siro in the second leg of the play-offs on Tuesday, sending the Norwegian minnow into the last 16 5-2 on aggregate.
After stunning Inter with a 3-1 win in the first leg in Bodo, the visiting side increased its aggregate lead when Jens Petter Hauge fired home a rebound in the 58th minute and 14 minutes later it was dreamland as Haakon Evjen effectively put the tie to bed.
The Arctic Circle team were the fairytale story of this season’s competition after sneaking into the play-offs with stunning wins over Manchester City and Atletico Madrid in the final two games of the league stage.
After recording three wins in a row in the competition in the first leg against Inter, the Norwegian team established an unchanged starting line-up for the return.
On what became a relatively comfortable evening for the Norwegian side, they rarely looked in danger of missing out on a first Champions League last-16 appearance as they became the first Norwegian side to progress from a knockout tie in the competition.
INTER DOMINATE EARLY PHASES
Inter needed goals and were immediately on the front foot, with Pio Esposito heading over from a cross in the opening minutes as the home crowd roared the ball forward.
Inter dominated the opening match and Marcus Thuram came close with a curler after fifteen minutes. Despite the home team’s relentless pressure, the score remained goalless at halftime.
Inter continued to apply pressure after the restart and had a penalty case for handball dismissed when Manuel Akanji’s effort was blocked by Fredrik Sjoevold, with VAR agreeing with the referee’s decision not to award a penalty.
Under continued pressure, the visiting side struck in the 58th minute when Ole Didrik Blomberg collected a loose pass on the edge of the Inter area and drove home. Yann Sommer pushed his shot away, but Hauge reacted quickest and converted the rebound from close range.
Evjen put the result beyond doubt in the 72nd minute, guiding a precise right-foot effort into the far bottom corner. While Alessandro Bastoni pulled a goal back for Inter in the 77th minute, it proved too late to change his fate.
