Another early departure, this time at five. When I left camp, the wild turkeys were devouring in alarm. My headlamp illuminated a sweet smell of sage on both sides of the path. After a few miles, the trail started to climb and climbed steadily for the rest of the day. Luckily it wasn’t with the tortuous ruggedness of yesterday’s Hauser Canyon climb.
As I reached the top of the first rise I could see the morning mist covering the lake below. As the sun rose, the day began to warm up and my stiff muscles loosened.
I hiked in and out with a new trail friend. As we chatted, the kilometers slipped away from us. For the most part, the road so far has been smooth and hard, so I can do what I love: walk. I have always been more of a walker than a climber. Some people need great views or the feeling of accomplishment that comes from reaching a high peak, but I have always loved hiking in nature.
I arrived at the small community of Mount Laguna and headed to the Tiny House Block, a series of really tiny houses, some of which have been converted into a hiker’s lodge. I was so exhausted from the day’s climbing that I collapsed into bed at 7:30, fell asleep immediately, and didn’t wake up until the next morning.
So far, I love the PCT. I have already met many wonderful people from all over the world, people who are quickly becoming new friends. There are people here for all kinds of reasons: the love of the outdoors, the relief of pain, the sheer challenge of doing something difficult. Whatever the reason, there’s a certain bond that comes from the fact that we’re all trying the same thing, facing the same physical challenges, and encouraging each other. It’s a good feeling.
