The French Prime Minister wants to speed up the security law after PSG UCL’s victory

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on Tuesday he would ask President Emmanuel Macron to convene an extraordinary parliamentary session in early July to speed up the passage of the government’s RIPOST security law following the violence linked to Paris Saint-Germain’s victory in the Champions League.

The bill was presented by the government on March 25 and has already been approved by the Senate. It targets what the government calls everyday disorder, including illegal rave parties, misuse of nitrous oxide, fireworks, mortars and drug use, and would increase some police and surveillance powers.

More than 200 people were injured and one person died in Paris after Paris Saint-Germain won the UEFA Champions League for the second year in a row, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Lecornu told the National Assembly that he would propose putting the RIPOST bill on the agenda the week of July 6, while adding that France is not doing enough to make perpetrators pay for what they destroy, and that repair costs are too often passed on “to society.”

The Prime Minister has also asked ministers to quickly come up with proposals to recover these amounts more effectively and act in a “much more compelling” way. He further ruled out the suspension of social benefits, but used part of the benefits, with the exception of a minimum subsistence allowance, to finance compensation for damage.
