Why did substitutes walk away playing as an XI in the opening Mexico-South Africa match?

The opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup has revamped the traditional pre-match lineup, with players from both countries no longer limited to the usual starting lineup before kick-off.

Under FIFA’s new presentation format, every player named in the matchday squad, including substitutes, will walk out and gather around the center circle for the line-up and anthems. The national flags of both teams were displayed as part of the ceremony, with large flag displays and elements on the pitch adding to the visual build-up.

FIFA says the aim is to make the pre-match ceremony more fan-centric and give every player, not just the starters, a part of the moment before representing the country on the World Cup stage. It is expected that the center circle format will be used throughout the tournament.
