FIFA World Cup 2026: Coach Broos regrets red cards, but sees hope for South Africa

South African coach Hugo Broos said his side can still take confidence from the 0-2 defeat to Mexico in Group A, which left the country with nine men after containing the home side for long periods in the tournament’s opening match on Thursday.

Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez gave Mexico victory at the Estadio Azteca, but Broos said the scoreline did not fully reflect his team’s defensive performance against the co-hosts in front of more than 80,000 fans.

“You play a World Cup, you play against a very good team, but we played a good match,” Broos told reporters.

«I saw a desperate Mexico. They didn’t know what to do with the ball. The organization was perfect defensively.»

South Africa struggled to create chances and Broos acknowledged his side must improve in attack if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

“Offensively, I think we have to improve,” he said. «If we can play the same game, but be better offensively, then I’m sure we will get a better result.»

THREE RED CARDS

The defeat left South Africa facing additional challenges after Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane were sent off in a match that also saw the dismissal of Mexico captain Cesar Montes, the first World Cup opener to receive three red cards.

Broos accepted Sithole’s dismissal for denying a scoring opportunity but questioned the decision that led to Zwane’s red card.

«I think you should accept the first card. I think you can discuss the second card, because it is the Mexican player who is blocking my player,» he said. «But it is the referee’s appreciation and we have to accept that.»

“We have two players who cannot play in the next match, but we have other players and if we can show the same mentality and the same way as we play today, I am sure we will get good results in the next two matches.”

South Africa next take on the Czech Republic in Atlanta, a match that will likely determine whether they remain in contention for a place in the knockout rounds.

“We need the next few days to get over the disappointment and also the fatigue,” Broos said. «But then we have to work on our attacking game, because that wasn’t enough today.»
