An Uber driver taking Argentina fans to a FIFA World Cup match was among four people injured in a series of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri, that left one man dead, police said.
A 22-year-old suspect, described by authorities as armed and dangerous, remained at large Thursday.
The five shootings occurred Tuesday between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. along a five-mile radius through the city. Three occurred on Interstates 70 and 670 through downtown Kansas City, while the remaining two occurred further east on Truman Road. They were all at least four miles from Arrowhead Stadium, where Argentina played Algeria.
Two American supporters from Argentina told the Argentine newspaper The nation that a car drove past the Uber they were riding in and fired two shots, hitting the driver in the leg. They initially thought the gunfire was a blown tire before realizing the driver had been injured.
The fans were taken to a police station to make statements before officers drove them to the stadium in patrol vehicles. Police Capt. Jacob Becchina said the driver’s injuries were not life-threatening.
Police said all three shootings on the highway involved eastbound vehicles, including one from neighboring Kansas.
Three adults and a teenager were hospitalized, with one adult in a life-threatening condition.
About 6:30 p.m., officers responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into a pole on Truman Road, east of the earlier shootings. The driver was taken to hospital, where doctors diagnosed a gunshot wound. He died later.
“Victims all reported that they were driving along the highway or roadway when one or more shots were fired at their vehicles,” Becchina said in an email.
Detectives believe the non-fatal shootings were carried out by the same suspect as he traveled east.
Investigators later tracked the suspect to a home in suburban Independence, about two miles east of where the fatal victim was found. A standoff ensued, but when officers entered the building around 8 a.m. Wednesday, the suspect was no longer there.
Authorities in Kansas City, Kansas, have issued an arrest warrant for the suspect in connection with an alleged illegal discharge of a firearm on June 11, police spokesperson Nancy Chartrand said.
