Why was Tah’s goal for Germany against Paraguay in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup disallowed?

Germany’s goal against Paraguay in the first half of extra time was disallowed during their FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match at Boston Stadium on Monday.

Jonathan Tah thought he had given Germany the lead in the 102nd minute when he headed home from a corner, but an intervention by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) pointed out a possible foul on Paraguay goalkeeper Orlanda Gill.

Referee Jalal Jayed then went to the monitor to ensure Gill had been fouled by Waldemar Anton in the build-up before Tah scored the goal.

The referee then overturned the goal and the score remained at 1–1.

Julio Enciso had given Paraguay a shock lead in the first half before Kai Havertz equalized early in the second period before the match went into extra time.
