Frenchman Kylian Mbappe scored a brace against Sweden in a round of 32, taking his goal tally at the 2026 World Cup to six.
Only Argentinian Lionel Messi has scored as many goals as Mbappé in the current tournament.
But Mbappe is ahead of Messi in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot race.
What are the tiebreaker rules for the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot?
According to the FIFA World Cup 2026 rules, the number of assists (as determined by the members of the FIFA Technical Study Group) will determine the Golden Boot if two or more players score the same number of goals.
If two or more players are still tied after counting the number of assists, the total minutes played in the tournament will be taken into account, with the player with the fewest minutes taking first place.
Mbappe currently has two assists in the tournament – both to set up Ousmane Dembele for goals against Norway – while Messi has no assists.
At the 2010 World Cup, four players finished with five goals each: Thomas Muller, Wesley Sneijder, David Villa and Diego Forlan. But Muller won the Golden Boot because he had more assists (3) out of four.
