Yocemetary – The walk

Yosemite is magical. Jug and I were the first two up, so early this morning we quietly got up and headed to breakfast at Curry Village. The coffee shop offers free coffee for PCT hikers, so I picked up an iced vanilla latte and some food.

Unfortunately, even in Yosemite I had to do some hiking duties. After a hot shower I headed back to the town grocery store to restock. They had great options like Filo’s walking tamales and blue bottle instant coffee. It was a bit of an expensive resupply, but it was pretty amazing that I could buy everything I wanted in the middle of a national park.

Yocemetary – The walk

This afternoon there was a ranger at the base of El Capitan answering questions and setting up telescopes to watch the climbers on the wall. El Cap is one of those top climbing destinations you hear about, but can’t understand how great it is until you’re at its base. Bubbles and Cowboy went up a bit and ran into some people who had set up a rope swing on an anchor on a lower ledge. They both had the opportunity to swing in a climbing harness with the entire valley below them. The videos and photos were incredible. I’m so glad you had that memory.

When 2:00 rolled around, Drom, Birdman and I were hungry for lunch. We got sandwiches at the Degnan deli in town. The town is right next to a handful of museums and exhibits, so Drom and I popped in to read about the history of Yosemite while Birdman went to float the Merced. The highlight was definitely walking through the Yosemite Cemetery. He said there should be a book that tells the stories of those buried in the cemetery. I would be fascinated to know who they are and how they relate to the park.

We returned to camp for dinner by the campfire with the crew. Vegetables, sausages and potatoes taste better when roasted over a fire. Of course, we had s’mores for dessert. I bought some Reese’s to use instead of chocolate. It was one of my best ideas so far.

I absolutely could spend more time here, but I’m looking forward to getting back on the trail. I really want to sleep in my tent again in the quiet of the countryside.
