PCT Sobo day 29 – mmm, berries!

Day 29

Home: TENTSITE, Mile 470.5

END: TENTSITE, MILLA 490.9

Walked miles: 20.4 miles

This morning, the sun leaked gently through the dense tree cover. Sun and I were full and ready at our usual moment, but we took a brief detour to the camp to leave our garbage and visit the bathroom. What a luxury!

The morning hiking began with a walk through the forest. There were some clouds in the sky, so the temperature remained at a pleasant level. We had two climbs to address today, grateful for the cooler climate.

After the first miles, it was time to start the first climb. Not wanting to concentrate too much on burning on my legs, I put on a podcast and started working. I climbed through the large and prehistoric ferns and passed over massive moss colored banana. They were absolutely massive, the size of my hand, often just in the middle of the path. I hoped not having the unpleasant experience of accidentally stepping one. Ewwww!

When I met Sun at the top of the climb (it is always faster than me), my shirt was soaked in sweat. I shuddered as I ate my snack and my body cools. This morning was not too remarkable, but we were making constant progress.

In a short time, it was time to descend. Along the way, we find bush loaded with shrubs with blueberries and blueberries. Once again, Sun and I interrupted our hiking at least a dozen times to collect and eat the juicy berries. There were so many and they were so good! We couldn’t resist!

At the end of the descent, we stopped for lunch near a stream. We had spent several Nobo and several days hikers, but the path was a bit quiet today. Our goal for today was to reach a camp at the top of the next climb, but had no water. Unfortunately, that meant a transport of uphill. And you know how much I love water: not at all.

Even so, we fill our bottles with 2.5 l of water and start the climb. It was a bit steep, but since I had undone a good amount of garbage this morning, my pack was not too heavy. Up and up, we take a break in the middle of the way before continuing. The path began to flatten and once again we were immersed in a country of berries.

Our hands, mouths and teeth were stained pink and purple of all the berries that we collected and ate. These were some of the best berries we had seen so far. They were plumbing and ripe, ready to be collected and eaten. It was our lucky day!

PCT Sobo day 29 – mmm, berries!

Looking at the map, we had approximately 1.5 miles at our planned camp. However, we find a little perfect place. We had a view of Mount St. Helen’s, Mount Adams and Mount Rainier; The sun warmed the site; No mosquito bothered us; And there were berries around us. What else could we want? The other site was in the forest without view and probably without berries. It was an obvious to stop early and stay here.

The night was still young, so we had time to enjoy our perfect site. Tomorrow we would arrive at Cascade Locks and Oregon (yes!), So I discovered logistics for that. Of course, we are more berries and we discover which bushes had the tastiest. After dinner, the sun began to wear, painting the clouds and the sky in yellow and purple soft. Today was a good day.

And that is a day in the life of a PCT Sobo hiker!
