Montse Tome had expected to keep her job as a coach of Spain Women’s National Team after he led it to the final of the European Championship last month and says that she does not know why her contract was not extended.
«Things happen in the football that you don’t expect,» Tome said in an interview with the Spanish radio Chain.
The Spanish football federation announced on Monday that it was not expanding Tome’s contract and replaced her by former player Sonia Bermudez.

The announcement came two weeks after Spain lost the Euro 2025 final to England in a penalty shootout.
Tome, who took over the track after Spain won the World Cup 2023, also led the country to the title of the Inaugural Women’s Nations League last year.
Tome said she was surprised by the Federation’s decision not to extend her contract, which ends at the end of the month. She said that Federation President Rafael Louzan had told her that she would stay the lead if Spain would do well at Euro 2025.
«He has always shown a lot of faith in me, but I am a bit disappointed about how everything was treated. He did not keep his word about continuity. I felt that he was happy with my work,» Tome said.
«It was hard to understand everything that has happened since the final. It is understandable that the federation wants to take a new direction, but that message was not really clear to me. They had given me a different impression.»
Tome said she didn’t bother that she had not received farewell messages from her players on social media. «I have received many messages from them,» she said. «I felt greatly respected by everyone. I am not worried about whether they posted them online or not.»

The decision to replace Tome – the first woman to coach the senior ladies team in Spain – was taken by the board members of the Federation.
She had been an assistant to former coach Jorge Vilda during the World Cup and was promoted in the consequences of the non -consensual kiss of former Federation President Luis Rubiales by player Jenni Hermoso.
Tome was criticized by some because he had not included Hermoso in recent call-ups, but she always claimed that it was a decision based on sports performances.
«I don’t want to think it had anything to do with it,» Tomé said. «Since I was appointed, they have allowed me to make decisions based on my sports criteria. Nobody said that I had to bring in this player or another player. I never had to send the list of players to a president.»
