AC Milan’s bid for a place in the Champions League suffered a major setback on Sunday after being defeated 2-3 by Atalanta at the San Siro, further fueling home fans’ protests against the club’s hierarchy.
Ederson and Davide Zappacosta scored for the visitors in the first half, while Giacomo Raspadori added a third goal six minutes after the break. Strahinja Pavlovic pulled one back two minutes before the end and Christopher Nkunku converted an extra time penalty.
The hosts came into the match under pressure after AS Roma’s 3-2 win over Parma leveled the score with Milan. Milan hold the all-important fourth spot, thanks to their head-to-head record against Roma, with two rounds remaining.
Title winners Inter Milan have 85 points, with Napoli on 70, before hosting Bologna on Monday. Juventus are third in the standings with 68 points, one ahead of Milan and Roma, while Como are two points further adrift in sixth. Atalanta is seventh with 58 points.
Milan fans held a protest march outside the stadium before the match, with CEO Giorgio Furlani the main target. Since their last league title win in 2022, Milan fans have had little to celebrate, with only last season’s Italian Super Cup added to the trophy cabinet.
Milan’s title challenge was long gone, and a fourth defeat in six games threatens to ruin Massimiliano Allegri’s first season back in charge at the club where he won the Scudetto in his first spell.
