AFC U-17 Asian Cup: India loses 4-0 to Australia in the opener

India U-17 made a disappointing return to Asia’s premier youth competition, losing 4-0 to three-time semi-finalists Australia in the AFC U-17 Asian Cup 2026 opener at King Abdullah Sports City in Saudi Arabia.

Additional expectations were built around India after North Korea withdrew from the tournament, reducing the group to three teams including Uzbekistan and Australia.

Australia started on the front foot, taking an early lead in the first quarter before doubling their lead through a Max Court penalty. Court scored again in the second half before Henrique Oliveira sealed the win for the Australian side.

India will take on Uzbekistan in their next match on May 10.
