Anegado (Day 55) – The walk

All night long, rain pounded on the tin roof of the shelter. At several points it was so loud that it woke me up, sounding like a hailstorm. I was grateful not to be in my tent.

Wet

For most of the day, the trail meandered alongside Stony Creek. With all the rain, it was flowing quickly. There were a few points where we had to cross it, as the trail continued on the other side. While rock hopping, my water bottle fell out of my backpack and started floating down the river. As I was trying to reach it, both of my feet slipped in the water. If my shoes weren’t completely soaked from the rain, they were now.

I managed to grab the bottle before it completely disappeared. But most of the day went like this. Wet, slippery and humid. However, the weather brought out some cool animals. There was a doe with her little fawn. He was so young that he still had his spots. I also saw my first box turtle along the way and a black rat snake. It was interesting because you could still see faint traces of its juvenile scale marks.

Rain on my parade

I originally planned to spend the day at Bailey Gap Shelter, although I found out it was closed due to bear activity. This made it a long 20.3 mile day to Wind Rock to camp. I started filtering and chemically treating my water, as rumors of a nearby norovirus outbreak are also circulating.

The sky had cleared a bit when I arrived at camp. There was a nice view from the cliff. It will be another rainy night and this time I will spend it in my tent.
