Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Brentford on Monday put Manchester United on the brink of Champions League qualification, but interim manager Michael Carrick said they must keep pushing to finish as high as possible in the Premier League.
The win moved United into third place with 61 points, 11 ahead of sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion, with four games remaining.
With the top five qualifying for the Champions League next season, United need two more points to seal their return to Europe’s elite competition after a two-year absence.
«The Champions League is one thing, but it’s not something we should celebrate too much,» former United midfielder Carrick told reporters.
“We actually want to finish high in the league, and we want to challenge high in the league and try to get more points so that our season doesn’t end when that happens.
“We have put ourselves in a good position but there is still more work to be done,” added Carrick, who took charge of sixth-placed United in January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.
Casemiro was on the scoresheet on Monday and although supporters have called for the club to keep him for another year, Carrick said the midfielder’s situation was clear.
«It’s quite clear from both sides. Probably the situation and the clarity of it helped everything,» he added.
“It means a lot to him and it’s an honor for him because of the situation it’s in. He also gave absolutely everything and had some big moments for us.”
United play fourth-placed Liverpool on Sunday.
