Atletico Madrid signs Grimaldo from Leverkusen for a contract of 20 million euros

Atletico Madrid has signed Spanish defender Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen, the La Liga club said on Tuesday, for a reported fee of 20 million euros ($23 million). Reports also state that the compensation is around 20 million euros.

“Grimaldo has signed for our club until June 30, 2030,” Atletico said in a statement.

«A versatile left back who can also play as a wing-back, central midfielder and even attacking midfielder. He stands out for his technique and vision,» the club said.

The 30-year-old, who spent time at Barcelona’s academy before joining Benfica in 2016, is currently with Spain at the World Cup.

Grimaldo moved to Leverkusen in 2023 and played a key role in the Bundesliga-winning side under Xabi Alonso in 2024.

The attacking full-back is also a set-piece specialist, having scored six free-kicks in the last three seasons. No player has scored more goals in Europe’s top five leagues in that period.

Atletico were previously linked with Marc Cucurella, who signed for rivals Real Madrid earlier in June before moving to Grimaldo to strengthen Diego Simeone’s options.

The Rojiblancos finished fourth in La Liga last season, 25 points behind champions Barcelona, and were defeated by Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final.
