Barcelona beats Real Madrid 2-0 and takes the La Liga title

Barcelona turned the Clásico into a coronation on Sunday, beating Real Madrid 2-0 at a roaring Camp Nou to claim a 29th La Liga title.

Hansi Flick’s side moved to an unassailable 91 points, 14 ahead of second-place Real with three games remaining. The victory capped a dominant campaign in which they lost just four league matches. Villarreal is third with 69 points.

Real arrived needing a win to keep their razor-thin title hopes alive. Marcus Rashford crushed those ambitions just nine minutes into the match.

Antonio Rudiger fouled Ferran Torres just outside the penalty area and Rashford curled a brilliant free-kick into Thibaut Courtois’ top left corner to give Barcelona an early lead and delight the home crowd.

Nine minutes later, Barcelona doubled their lead. Fermin Lopez crossed into the area and Dani Olmo produced a clever back heel that sent the ball into the path of Torres, who fired a fierce strike into the top corner.

The win completed back-to-back league titles for Flick, who also claimed a La Liga and Copa del Rey double in his first season last year.

Both sides were severely exhausted. Barcelona were without Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Jules Kounde in the starting line-up.

Real’s list of missing players was longer, with Eder Militao, Dani Carvajal, Ferland Mendy, Arda Guler and Rodrygo all absent. Federico Valverde also missed the match after suffering a head injury following a midweek dressing room fight with teammate Aurelien Tchouameni, with both players fined €500,000 over the incident.

Kylian Mbappe did not travel due to a leg muscle injury, forcing manager Alvaro Arbeloa to start Vinicius Jr alongside academy striker Gonzalo, while Jude Bellingham and Brahim Diaz stepped up in support.

Real threatened before half time through Vinicius and Gonzalo, but Barcelona bore the greater danger. Courtois kept the visitor alive before half-time with excellent saves from Torres and Rashford.

Barcelona continued to apply pressure after the break, Rashford repeatedly tormenting left-back Fran Garcia on the right, while Courtois made another sharp stop with his left foot to deny Torres’ point in the 56th minute.

Bellingham had a goal disallowed for offside in the 62nd minute and Joan Garcia quickly denied Vinicius in a one-on-one, preventing the Brazilian from lifting the ball over him.

Real continued to push late, but there was little spirit in attack and Barcelona quietly saw out victory before the title celebrations began.
