Previous: C2C Day 13 – Egton Bridge to Goathland
The view from Egton Bridge
The last day!
This was it. Our last day on the Camino de Costa a Costa. And it seemed to be a beautiful day, although not warm. We started the drive towards Grosmont and I was pleasantly surprised at how picturesque Grosmont was. I was sure I read somewhere that it’s not the most picturesque place, but I would definitely stay there next time. The trains weren’t running so we didn’t get to see any of the old steam engines. However, we ran into two of our friends from Frith Lodge. It’s so fun to meet people days later!

We soon got our first glimpse of the North Sea. It really is something when you see the other coast. The concept that you’ve almost walked across the country starts to get to you. However, we still had a long way to go.

The first view of the North Sea.
Littlebeck

Approaching the village of Littlebeck, which lies along Little Beck
The little village of Littlebeck is beyond pretty. And once you’re done, you’ll immediately enter a beautiful forest, following Little Beck to Falling Foss waterfall. The tea garden is open very limited hours so we were not able to experience it. However, from the wide roads, ample signs and ample parking you can tell that it must be quite crowded here at times.

The rock carving known as The Hermitage in Little Beck Wood, near Falling Foss
The next section was through a moor that had recently been burned. Between the charred landscape and the howling wind, everything was quite desolate. But at that moment we could already smell the sea and that carried us away.

They are preparing to lay more slabs on the desolate wasteland.
The North Sea and RHB
There it was, finally! The North Sea. The coastline is stunning, with high cliffs and crashing waves. Lots of people were out for a walk and we caught up and walked a bit with one of the women we had had lunch with in Glaisdale. We hadn’t seen the One Tom again since the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge, and we really weren’t expecting to as we had stopped for that extra night at Egton Bridge.

Approaching Robin Hood’s Bay
We were staying in the wonderful Victoria Hotel at Robin Hood’s Bay, so it was difficult to get through there and down the steep road to the seafront. One last hill! The pub at the end of C2C was packed, inside and out. We threw our pebbles from the Irish Sea into the North Sea, which was a challenge due to the very high tide and breaking waves. But we didn’t get carried away, instead we had a celebratory pint and chatted to some people we recognized along the way.
It was really exciting to have finished this wonderful trip!

Goodbye Irish Sea pebble!

RHB at high tide…

…and RHB at low tide the next morning

Breaking Bad
Everyone we talked to about New Mexico during our trip knew our state from the television series Breaking Bad. It didn’t matter what country they came from. Of course, we talked about how the reality of New Mexico is a little different than the show. The good thing is that everyone agreed that New Mexico is beautiful, and it is!
Total Lift Gain
Including the 12 days on the C2C and our two short trips, our total elevation gain over 14 days was 31,785′ or 9,688 m. Yes, C2C is definitely not flat!
