It’s the day before I start my hike! Today was reserved for last minute errands and carb loading with some of my favorite foods.
Is it even the beginning of a hike without the *quintessential* team photo?
I started the day by sleeping in, then had a cup of coffee and investigated the last few segments of the trail.
“The Colorado Trail” 10th ed. The book has been a great help when planning.
Mexican food is one of my favorites, so I treated myself to a lunch of enchiladas and a key lime margarita.
A plate of enchiladas at The Leadville Cantina in Leadville, CO.
My husband, Reid, decided to perform a little “trail magic” and leave gallons of water at the beginning of segment 4. This area is known for its limited water availability. Gallons of water will be left for hikers to use as needed. I visited the local supermarket to buy water.

We had Thai noodle dishes for dinner 🙂
Thai noodles for my farewell dinner! (Extra soy sauce, full sodium).
I have had apprehensions throughout this entire preparation process, but today my head is pretty calm. In medical school I learned that preparing for an important exam required months of studying; studying at the last minute doesn’t work. For this hike, I have studied and prepared everything I currently know; No last-minute changes to equipment or cramming information on backpackers will significantly alter tomorrow’s success.
Would I like my backpack to be lighter? Yeah.
Do I wish I had found the perfect sock and shoe combination to prevent blisters? Yeah.
Are there things I’ve overlooked? Absolutely.
But decisions are made. The backpack is packed (minus the block of cheese I need to get out of the fridge in the morning)! It’s time to go.
My plan is to get to the trailhead by 6am, which means we have to leave the house by 4am. I’m going to bed!
See you there
