Commitments – AT Thru Hike by Fox – Day 107

Today I took 8.4 miles near Kinsman Notch to stay at the Notch Hostel. Last night I met up with Digs, Murder Leg, Pipsqueak and Cowboy at Jeffers Brooks. We all headed to the hostel.

First, however, I climbed and overcame Mount Mousilake. The climb was long and steady, but not painfully steep or technical. Our entire group stopped at the top to have lunch and relax for a while. With only 8.4 miles today, there was no rush. With a heat wave approaching, the summit wind provided a welcome relief from the heat.

Murder Leg and I talked much of the way down and we both decided to loosen the pack with as many targets as possible. I for one need to do whatever it takes to finish, including loose packaging. The walk has worn me out. Both knees hurt intermittently. Leg cramps threaten daily pain. Both are related to inflammation and so far I have managed them successfully with ibuprofen. But anti-inflammatories have limits. I only have to go 400 more miles.

Johnney Shofar met us in the parking lot and offered us refreshments and snacks. We exchanged stories while waiting for the ferry. The Notch Hostel covered all of our key needs: laundry, transportation, shower, kitchen, and bunk bed. They also helped us solve a complex problem for Murder Leg and me, as well as being super friendly in general.
