Day 79 – Harper’s Historic Ferry

Zero day today at Harpers Ferry! Known as the psychological midpoint of the AT.

Pancake and photo gatherings

It was pretty hot in the bunk last night, but I made it work. We had a quiet morning, we finally got up and went downstairs, where the cafe was located. After having a cup, I offered to make pancakes for the group. I started making pancakes and systematically distributing them to the gang. After making sure everyone had their fill, I made myself a couple of huge pancakes and sat back to enjoy them! As I finished eating, Shooter arrived and another member of the OG trail group met up! At least temporarily. Also showing up was Birdie, who I hadn’t met before but who had been walking with Shooter the last few days and who would also start walking with us.

Once everyone was ready, the group of us went to the ATC building for a much-awaited visit. An iconic spot along the trail and where you can take a photo in front of the white brick ATC building, as hikers have been doing for decades. We went there to see the interior, which included some informative displays, merchandise, and a hiker’s lounge. Of course, we had to take photos in front of the building and we even took a group photo too!

My number at the trailhead was 1013, meaning I was the 1013th person to start at Amicalola Falls. At Harper’s Ferry I was the 310th person to pass, which shows some of the wear and tear along the way and the number of people I have passed.

Out and about

After visiting the ATC, we went to historic downtown Harper’s Ferry and had a cold drink before lunch. Shooter’s aunt came to visit him and have lunch with him, and we shamelessly tagged along. We had lunch at The Rabbit Hole, which had great food, an extensive drinks menu, and lots of fun wall decor.

After lunch we went to have an ice cream while we continued walking through the town before returning to the hostel. On the way back we took a small detour and got a great view of the rivers converging outside of Harper’s Ferry.

Back at the hostel I worked on some of my hiking duties until we decided to order pizza and run to 7 Eleven to resupply. I ordered a 16″ Meat Lovers pizza and while it was a challenge, the thought of not adding another notch to my entire pizza tracker was enough to push me to complete it. Mama Miller never got up again!
