Fermin Lopez to miss 2026 FIFA World Cup — Spanish midfielder suffers a broken foot at Barcelona


Spanish midfielder Fermin Lopez will miss this summer’s World Cup after his club Barcelona diagnosed him with a foot fracture on Monday, which will require surgery.

The 23-year-old is likely to have been called up by Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente for this summer’s tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Fermin suffered the injury on Sunday during Spanish champions Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Real Betis in La Liga.

«First team player Fermin Lopez suffered a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot during yesterday’s match. The player will undergo surgical treatment,» Barcelona said in a statement.

Lopez has become a regular for Barcelona over the past two seasons and has seven caps for Spain to his name.
