FIFA World Cup 2026: Issa Diop suspended for potential World Cup semi-final following foul on Mbappé

Moroccan defender Issa Diop will be unable to play in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup if the Atlas Lions beat France in the round of 16 in Boston on Thursday.

Diop was shown a yellow card for a rash challenge on Kylian Mbappe, meaning an automatic ban for the centre-back in the next World Cup match in Morocco.

Diop, who had been a French international in the age group tournaments, was Mbappe’s teammate in the victorious French team at the 2016 European U-19 Championships.

By descent, Diop was also eligible to play for Senegal and Morocco at senior level, opting for the latter earlier this year.

He started in all but one of Morocco’s matches at this World Cup and scored once against the Netherlands in the round of 32.
