Fiorentina draw for both against Atalanta in a bleak end to the season

Fiorentina drew 1-1 with Atalanta as the clubs wrapped up disappointing Serie A campaigns on Friday.

Roberto Piccoli gave Fiorentina the lead just before half-time, but an own goal from Pietro Comuzzo eight minutes from time gave Atalanta a share of the points and ensured Fiorentina’s worst classification since 2019.

The club from Florence started the season terribly and had to wait until the 16th round to record their first league victory.

A recovery in the new year strengthened the league position to 14th, although it could fall further if Genoa or Cagliari, the two teams immediately below, win this weekend.

It was also a disappointing season for Atalanta, whose top four guaranteed Champions League football for the past two seasons.

Atalanta finishes seventh, which means a place in the Conference League, but has only won one of its last seven Serie A matches.
